Sometimes, for no reason at all, Ianto feels sad. He tells himself he’s being silly, because what does he have to feel sad about? He’s alive, immortal, travelling the universe with the man he loves, even if there are times he finds Jack utterly exasperating, and they get to help people in need everywhere they go. It’s an amazing life, far better than anything he could have imagined for himself back when he was just an ordinary mortal man.
He and Jack have met so many wonderful people along the way, made so many friends, and maybe that’s what makes him sad sometimes, because for all the friends they’ve made, how many do they ever get to see again after they go their separate ways? Spaceships passing in the black. They never stay anywhere for very long, simply because the universe is so big, and there’s so much they haven’t seen yet, so many people, and colonies, and entire planets that still need a little outside help.
And what of earth? Time keeps moving on, and by now, everyone they ever knew in person, everyone who ever crossed their paths… all gone. It’s sad remembering them, but better than forgetting.
