Eyes closed, head tipped back, Dee is dreaming of warm sunshine and sandy beaches. He can feel the cool wavelets rippling and lapping over his bare feet, a soft breeze lifting his hair and drying the sweat on his face and back. He’s shirtless, dressed only in trunks; what more does anyone need on a beach?


Ryo is there too, splashing about in the water, calling to Dee to join him. Dee can hear his baby’s voice over the rush of the waves…


“Dee, wake up! We’re here!” A hand is shaking him, dragging him reluctantly out of paradise.


“Whu?”


“I said we’re here.”


Opening his eyes, Dee stares gloomily out the car window at the dark skies and the pouring rain. Litter dances past, blown by a strong wind that doesn’t quite qualify as gale force, although not for want of trying. It’s midwinter in New York and there’s not a sandy beach to be seen.


He hunches his shoulders inside his heavy winter coat, wishing he could shut his eyes again and sip back into his wonderful dream, but that’s out; there’s work to do, crimes to be solved.


“This sucks. I was dreamin’ we were on vacation.”
