It was surprising how little it took to turn order into complete chaos, Ryo mused as he and Dee, along with at least a dozen more cops, dove in trying to sort the situation out.
The parade had been perfectly orderly, everything going smooth as silk, until a member of the band had tripped on his loose shoelace, knocking into the drummer marching beside him and sending the other man staggering sideways into the barrier holding the crowd back.
The barrier had toppled under the combined weight of drummer and drum, the crowd had tried to move out of the way, jostling others, and several scuffles had broken out.
Meanwhile, the marching band had been thrown into confusion, several members hitting wrong notes, others losing their place as two of them fell over the one with the loose shoelace, and more fell over them…
The lead float managed to stop, but whoever was in charge of the one behind it must not have been paying attention. It was a relatively minor collision, but it led to shouting, and shoving, and more collisions further on down the line. Everyone was blaming everyone else and before long fists were flying.
Dee ducked as someone took a swing at him, pulled his badge, raised his voice, and attempted to calm an irate bunch of elves.
Ryo would have helped but he was busy trying to untangle a heap of band members and their instruments, a task that was easier said than done.
By now, half the spectators had broken through the barriers onto the street, some of them trying to help while others were joining the fight. Ryo could only hope reinforcements were on the way; they were badly needed.
This parade would surely go down in history as the most chaotic ever.
