Ryo isn’t a virgin, hasn’t been since he was seventeen, although he would gladly erase THAT incident from his memory, because it had been unplanned, awkward, and ultimately more embarrassing than successful. And that had been BEFORE her mom had arrived home unexpectedly, bringing proceeding to an abrupt halt, much to his relief and his girlfriend’s annoyance. They’d broken up shortly afterwards, without ever getting around to a second attempt, which, when he’d thought about it afterwards, had probably been just as well. Some things simply weren’t meant to be.

Still, he’s had several lovers since then, all of them women, even though none of the relationships lasted long, because he’d always felt there was something not quite right. None of them had been a good fit for him, no matter how much he’d liked them as friends, and the sex had been indifferent at best, or maybe the problem was that he’d been indifferent to having sex… One or the other. Looking back, he supposes the girls must have realised he just wasn’t that into them, not the way they’d wanted him to be, so they’d gone looking for someone more… accessible perhaps. Someone with a more active libido who could satisfy them in all the ways he wasn’t, and…

Well, that was why he’d shown up for his first day as a detective at the two-seven, in his mid-twenties and resoundingly single, having decided to focus on work since his love life, what little there’d been of it, was such a disaster.

Why Dee had been so fixated on him from that first day, Ryo still doesn’t understand, because he’s never considered himself anything special in the looks department, certainly not what anyone would describe as classically handsome, unlike Dee with his movie star good looks. His nose is a little too sharp, his ears a bit… pointy, his eyes too big and his chin too long. Someone had once said he looked kind of elfin, and even now, years later, he still isn’t sure whether she’d meant it in a good or a bad way. Not that it mattered since they’d only dated for a month.

On top of all that, he’s a perfectionist, obsessive about his job, and yes, okay, he can be a bit of an airhead. But that’s only because ninety percent of his brain is usually busy going over the details of the cases he’s working on, trying to fit all the random facts and evidence together. It doesn’t leave much room for him to think about anything else, like where he left his keys, and why his phone is in the breadbin. Maybe that’s partly why it took him so long to realise he was falling in love with Dee…

No, that’s just a lame attempt to excuse his own wilful blindness. The reason he ignored his attraction to his work partner for such a ridiculously long time was mostly because he was so determinedly in denial about his sexuality. He preferred to tell himself that he simply had a lower sex drive than most guys his age, or he hadn’t found the right woman, or he was too busy with work, didn’t have time for relationships, and anyway he had a kid to look after now… Between his job, and the demands of being a single father, there weren’t enough hours in the day to fit in dating as well, and how was he supposed to meet someone anyway?

When exactly had he become so good at lying to himself? Looking back, it’s a bit scary to realise how easily he’d been able to bury the uncomfortable truth he was trying to avoid facing; at least until Dee had come along, chipped away at the walls he’d erected around himself, and forced the truth to the surface, but now…

Now Ryo can see himself more clearly than he ever has, and he’s learned a few things that have surprised him. He’s not indifferent to sex, for one; not when it’s with the right person, of the right gender, someone who has the correct anatomy to give him what he needs. He also has a considerably higher sex drive than he’d ever suspected, and a healthy libido, although…

He still finds sex embarrassing, even if it’s way better than anything he experienced with his previous lovers, but he suspects that’s a lingering hang-up that he’ll eventually get over, with Dee’s help. And if there’s one thing he knows he can count on with Dee, it’s that his partner will willingly, even enthusiastically, work on making sure Ryo has a full and satisfying sex life. Dee is very dedicated in that department.

It makes Ryo smile to think of the lengths Dee’s been willing to go to just to help him feel more comfortable with his own body, his needs and desires, to show him it’s okay to want sex, and equally okay, even encouraged, to ask for what he wants. All the girls he slept with seemed to expect him to somehow instinctively know what to do, what he wanted, what THEY wanted, and how to please them as well as himself, but back then he was so confused about everything that he didn’t have a clue. He didn’t understand his own body, so how could he be expected to understand someone with a completely different, strangely alien anatomy?

Dee is different, of course, willing to teach Ryo everything about pleasure, how to experience it as well as how to give it. He’s patient as well as passionate, educational as well as erotic, sensitive as well as sensual. Sometimes serious, sometimes silly, he’s turned sex from a chore Ryo always preferred to avoid, if at all possible, into an adventure they can embark on together, an eye-opening voyage of discovery.

With Dee, there’s no confusion anymore, no uncertainty, no sense of being different from everyone else and completely out of his depth; there’s only love, and love can overcome everything, even the most deeply rooted self-delusion. He’s living proof of that.
