“Careful,” Ianto warned, setting Jack’s coffee within easy reach. “It’s hot.”
Jack ignored the warning, picking up the mug and slurping from it. “Perfect.”
“I don’t know how you can do that without burning your insides. You must have a cast-iron gullet! If you’re not careful, you’ll wind up with stomach ulcers.”
“I’m immortal. Takes a lot to harm me.”
Ianto snorted. “Right. You can drink scalding hot coffee without flinching, but a papercut or a pinched finger brings tears to your eyes.”
“Fingers are sensitive, they have more nerve endings than my insides do. If I swallow quickly enough, I don’t feel a thing.”
“You just like showing everyone how tough you are.”
Jack just laughed.
Then he got pregnant, and coffee was off the menu until after the baby was delivered. Herbal teas were the order of the day, and since Jack didn’t like them much, he was less eager to drink them.
Finally, with their newborn daughter asleep in her crib, Jack was free to indulge his love of coffee once more. He picked up his mug and blissfully inhaled the delicious aroma before taking a big swig.
“OW OW OW!”
“What’s wrong?”
“I burned my mouth!”
