It was Ryo’s striking looks, the bright hair, and eyes so dark they were almost black, that first got Dee’s attention, but it was the kind of man Ryo was that changed the initial lust to admiration and love.

Ryo was intelligent, courageous, determined, dedicated to bringing criminals to justice, but above all, he was kind. People mattered to him, from the young orphaned boy he first comforted and then adopted, to the girl who just wanted her dying father to come home, to countless other unfortunates he met in the course of their work. Kindness and compassion were things Ryo never had to think about; they came as naturally to him as breathing. More than anything, Dee wanted to have that same kindness and understanding directed his way.

It wasn’t that he’d been starved of attention growing up. Mother and Jess had always been there for him, but Ryo was different. Dee had dated his share of both women and men, but until Ryo he’d never met anyone who cared about others so much that they’d go out of their way to help complete strangers. That was a rare quality. How could Dee possibly fail to fall in love with someone like that?

Perhaps it was partly Mother’s fault. She’d always told Dee the measure of a man was not in his physical strength, his looks, how successful he might be, how much money he made, or how many expensive things he owned; it was in his capacity to care about others, to help with no expectation of reward. She might have been describing Ryo, years before Dee ever met him.

Looking at Ryo, Dee felt like a failure, knowing he fell short of Mother’s ideal. Perhaps if he worked at becoming a better person, Ryo might love him.
