“Ever since I first heard about Torchwood, it’s been my ambition to work here,” the latest in a long line of applicants gushed. There was no doubting her enthusiasm at least. “I mean, when I was a kid, I wanted to join the police, like my grandfather, but I’m too short, and then there was all that weird stuff with the kids chanting a few years back… Not me, I was fifteen, too old to be affected, but it left a big impression, evil aliens taking control of little kids. It was awful. You were one of the people who stopped them, weren’t you? I saw your picture in the paper.”
 

“I was, yes,” Ianto agreed.
 

“Well anyway, I thought that’s what I’d like to do, something important, something I can be proud of. I know I’m small, but I do judo and kickboxing, and I’m a bit of a computer nerd.”
 

“We already have computer nerds.”
 

“Oh.” Her face fell.
 

“It says on your application that you speak several languages.”
 

“Yes. Well, I’m half Japanese, and I also speak German, Swedish, and Portuguese.”
 

“A talent for languages is a valuable asset. Welcome aboard, Ms Parker.” Ianto shook her hand.
