Ryo was off work, home with a bad cold and a fever. Dee didn’t resent him for that, he was the one who’d told Ryo to stay home in the first place, but it did mean that workwise Dee was stuck in a less than ideal situation.

 
Drake was also absent today, a dental appointment for root canal work that meant he’d probably be out for a couple of days. That left two detectives in the SCU without their regular work partners, so the Chief had teamed Dee up with JJ for the day, which was Dee’s idea of cruel and unusual punishment.
 

In the passenger seat, on their way to interview witnesses to an armed robbery, JJ was in mid-ramble, going on about romance, and true love, hearts and flowers, and a whole lot more mushy stuff that Dee didn’t want to think about. Not that he was listening; he’d long since mastered the art of tuning JJ out. Most of Dee’s attention was focused on the road ahead, and the traffic around them, since he was driving. Between that and wondering how Ryo was, his mind was fully occupied, leaving nothing to spare for his lovesick colleague.

 
Well, that wasn’t quite true. As he let JJ’s words go in one ear and out the other, Dee retained just enough awareness of what the smaller man was rambling about to be sure he wasn’t giving his unwanted admirer any encouragement.
 

JJ grabbed at his arm. “What do you think?”
 

“I don’t,” Dee snapped back. “You do know I’m not listenin’, right? I’ve got better things to do with my time, and you’re not sayin’ anything I wanna hear.”

 
“But…”
 

“But nothin’. Give it up, JJ. This isn’t a singles bar; we’re workin’. Try keepin’ your mind on the job.”
