It hadn’t been a good day for Dee, mostly because it had been his partner’s day off and he’d been forced to pair up with JJ for the entire eight-hour shift. It had felt more like a week. It wasn’t that he hated the little guy, if JJ had treated him like anyone else, they would’ve probably gotten along fine. JJ was a good cop, it was just unfortunate that he’d set his sights on winning Dee’s heart years ago at the academy, and Dee had never wanted to be the object of his fellow cadet’s frustrated desires in the first place.
To Dee’s mind, the worst part of JJ’s obsession was that JJ really didn’t know him at all. His unwanted admirer had built up an image in his mind of the man he adored, but it wasn’t based on fact. If asked, Dee was sure JJ wouldn’t be able to correctly answer a single question about Dee’s likes and dislikes, from his favorite color to his favorite band, food, or anything else. Maybe he’d remember what beer Dee liked, because sometimes the detectives of the SCU went out for drinks after work, but that was about it.
“I’m not even a real person to him,” Dee said to his partner one night, relaxing on Ryo’s sofa after dinner while Bikky finished his homework. “I’m a figment of his demented imagination. He tells everyone he loves me, but he loves an idealised version of me that only exists in his head, and no matter what I say or do, he refuses to see the truth. No matter how much I yell at him, he insists I don’t mean it!”
“Poor Dee,” Ryo sympathised. “Some people spend so much time believing something, that even when the truth is staring them in the face, it’s hard to accept.” He squeezed Dee’s hand, leaning in to kiss him on the cheek. “I should know. I deluded myself for years.”
Bikky glanced up from his homework and scowled but didn’t object.
“Yeah, but you came to your senses in the end,” Dee teased, grinning at his lover.
“It wasn’t easy, letting go of everything I’d thought I knew about myself, all the things I’d tried to convince myself were true.”
“But you did.”
Ryo nodded. “And I’m much happier for it. JJ will figure things out eventually. Just give him time.”
“I’ll try.”
