Stress was something all cops had to learn to deal with, and everyone had their own methods, from drinking too much, to working out at the gym, to meditation. Ryo did Tai Chi, or baked, or ran, but at present he wasn’t able to do any of those things, having been injured during a raid on an arms dealer.
Most of his injuries were minor, bruised ribs from where a couple of bullets had hit his vest, but when he’d gone down, he’d landed badly, spraining his right wrist and ankle.
He was still able to work, although he was on desk duty, but being unable to indulge in any of his usual forms of stress relief wasn’t helping anything. He was so tense it was making his injuries hurt worse than they otherwise would have.
When Dee showed up uninvited, Ryo was understandably not in the best mood.
“What d’you want?”
“Ouch!” Dee grinned. “That’s some greetin’.”
“Sorry, I’m just not good company right now.”
“I know, that’s why I’m here. I come bearin’ gifts to help you feel better.”
“I’ve already got all the painkillers I need.”
“Like I’d bring somethin’ that lame! Although, to be fair, you do sometimes run out.”
“Not this time. The hospital gave me a prescription, and I got it filled right away.”
“Miracles will never cease.”
“Funny. So if it’s not painkillers, what did you bring?”
Dee opened his bag. “First, we have this.” He pulled out a bottle of lavender scented bubble bath. “You’re way tense, so I’m gonna help ya have a nice, relaxin’ soak. After that, I’ll order whatever ya want for dinner, my treat. Then there’s this.” He produced a small tub.
“Bubble mixture? That’s for kids!”
“It’s for anyone, and it’s good, clean fun. You can lie in the tub, blowin’ bubbles, or on the sofa, wherever. Trust me on this, bubbles are great for stress relief. You can imagine all your troubles floatin’ away in them, it’s very therapeutic.”
“Well, I suppose I could give it a try.”
“You won’t be sorry. Bath first, or bath and bubbles? Your choice.”
“Fine, bring the bubbles.” Ryo levered himself off the sofa.
Twenty minutes later, soaking in a hot bath, surrounded by the soothing aroma of lavender, Ryo blew a stream of bubbles, watching them drift away and burst.
“You were right, this really is relaxing.”
“Told ya!”

Date: 2024-07-11 02:31 am (UTC)I also want to add that I really appreciate the first paragraph... I've been thinking about trying to eek out a little writing time lately, and that first paragraph really hits the nail on the head. I tend to feel guilty whenever I'm not spending my time progressing J and me towards a better future, but we all need stress relievers! It's a part of myself that I just don't really want to give up -- but it's so hard trying to balance everything!!
