A/N: Triple drabble.
The Chief was tearing into Dee about his cavalier attitude towards rules and regulations. Again. It wasn’t the first time, probably wouldn’t be the last, and Dee was doing his best to let it all wash over him, because he’d done his job, he hadn’t messed up, and okay, maybe he did cut corners occasionally, but never in a way that might affect the outcome of a case when it went to trial.
“Dammit, Laytner, you could at least try to pretend you’re listening!” the old badger bellowed, going red in the face. “Why the hell can’t you just do things by the book? You’re better than this!”
That made Dee blink in surprise. “What?”
“That got your attention, did it?” Chief Smith said in a calmer voice. “You think I enjoy yelling at you all the damn time, huh? Think I’m doing it for my health? I’m not. I do it because you’re a damned good cop, and you’d be even better if you paid more attention to the rules and regulations. They exist for a reason.”
“I know.” Dee sighed. “But sometimes the rules get in the way of doin’ the job.”
“You think I don’t know that? I worked my way up to where I am, I’ve been where you are, but you can’t just follow the rules you like and ignore the rest. Think about the kind of example you’re setting for the younger officers. You wanna teach them to ignore the regulations?”
“No, sir. Guess I just never thought about anyone following my example.”
Warren Smith gave a snort of laughter. “If that’s the case, maybe I shouldn’t have partnered you with Maclean. I was hoping you’d show him the ropes.”
Dee gave a wry grin. “Think I’m learnin’ more from Ryo than I’m teachin’.”
