Growing up, it had annoyed Ryo that his mom never bought bags of sliced bread, only loaves that had to be sliced by hand. It wasn’t the necessity of cutting the bread that bothered him, it was simply that the sandwiches in the packed lunches he took to school were always weird shapes, while the PBJs in his friends’ lunchboxes were neatly square and cut on the diagonal, so they got to eat proper triangular sandwiches. Some of the other kids, even some of his friends, made fun of him for his wonky sandwiches.

He'd finally begged and pleaded with his mom to get sliced bread one week, insisting that it would make much better sandwiches, and she’d agreed, buying the brand that his friends’ moms always bought. He’d been excited to have proper sandwiches at last… right up until he’d taken his first bite.

The bread was limp and doughy, and it wadded up in his mouth into a sticky ball. As for the taste, it didn’t have much flavour at all, it was like it existed just so the contents of the sandwich had something to stick to. He’d eaten all his sandwiches, because he was hungry, but when he’d gotten home, he’d told his mom he didn’t like sliced bread, and could they get a proper loaf next time?

He'd still had to eat the gooey, tasteless sliced bread for a few days, until it was all gone, it was marginally better when it was toasted for breakfast, but after that, it was back to weirdly shaped loaves and tasty sandwiches made with wholemeal or granary bread, pumpernickel or rye, so many different textures and flavours.

Even now he still bought unsliced loaves from the baker instead of the sliced, mass-produced supermarket kind. They were much tastier.

What an untasty lesson Ryo has learned. Glad he could learn it now, though, not when he's old and missed out on a lifetime of wonderful food.
