“Where the hell’s our backup?” Dee snapped into his police radio.
“Sorry, Detective,” the despatch officer replied. “Unavoidable delay. There’s been a bad accident between you and the station, a five-car pile-up, with at least two of the vehicles on fire. Traffic is being diverted. The extra units should be with you in approximately seven minutes.”
“’Kay, thanks. Over and out.” Dee clipped his radio back in place. “Seven minutes. The way things are goin’ here, that’s gonna be about six minutes too long. Looks like we’re gonna haveta deal with this by ourselves.”
“Not ideal, but we don’t have much choice. If we don’t make a move soon, we’ll lose our chance. We need to get in there while the gang’s still arguing over how to divide up the loot.”
“You’ve got that look.” Dee didn’t like that look much, it meant Ryo was calculating odds, looking for the approach that presented the least risk. Not the risk-free option, because in this line of work there usually wasn’t one, but the one that gave them the best chance of doing their job without getting themselves killed. “What d’ya suggest?”
“You stay here and provide cover; I’ll work my way around to the window. From the fire escape opposite, I should be able to see in.”
“You won’t have any cover there.”
“I will if I’m careful. If I’m high enough, they won’t be able to get an angle on me without putting themselves in my line of fire.”
“Just be careful. If ya can’t get up there without bein’ seen, don’t risk it.”
“I know what I’m doing.”
“I know ya do. Don’t mean I’m not gonna worry.”
“Just be ready in case they make a break for it.”
“And hope backup arrives in time to round ‘em up.”
