Summary: Jack is the lone survivor of Torchwood Three, stuck with a responsibility he never wanted.

The rest of Jack’s team, or at least the team he was a part of, are dead, killed by their leader in what he considered an act of mercy. Where once was noise and bustle, conversation and camaraderie, now there’s nothing but silence and emptiness. Outside in Cardiff, people are celebrating the start of the new Millennium, but here beneath Roald Dahl Plas, all Jack can do is mourn the loss of his friends as he consigns their bodies to the morgue.
 

How could this have happened? How could he have missed the signs? Surely Alex can’t have gone mad in the time between Jack leaving the Hub to deal with a threat, and the time he returned to find his teammates dead. It was only a matter of hours!

 
But now Jack is alone, and worse, in charge of the whole place, because Alex passed that responsibility to him before shooting himself. He’s been left to rattle around Torchwood Three’s underground base, one man where there ought to be a team, and he doesn’t know what he should do next.

 
Should he rebuild the team, recruit more people who will inevitably die in Torchwood’s service, or go it alone?
