Reid can remember, in detail, every single time Derek Morgan has pulled his ass out of the fire, every occasion when his life has been in danger and his friend has been there to save him. It means a lot, having someone he can rely on to be there for him, to have his back, no matter what.
All the team at the BAU are there for each other; in their line of work, it’s a necessity. Danger comes in many forms, and no matter how careful they might be, one might see what the rest of them missed. They all have their particular skills and talents.
For a long time, guns weren’t among Reid’s. He was a thinker rather than a doer, the one who pulled clues and ideas seemingly out of thin air, fitting them together faster and more precisely than any of his colleagues. But guns are something he’s had to become comfortable with using, for his own safety as well as his team’s.
He’s glad about that now, because while the whole team are on scene, he’s the one here, in this doorway, looking at Derek on the floor, moments from death at the hands of the armed man standing over him. If Reid makes a mistake, fails to hit his target exactly right, the other man’s gun will almost certainly go off and then Derek will be dead.
That doesn’t happen.
Reid fires, the gunman dies, and Derek is… Not in good shape, but he’s alive and that’s what matters right now. From here the medics can take over. Reid has done his part, saved the friend who has saved him so many times in the past. It’s strange to be on this side of the equation, but helping each other is what friends do.
