Summary: Time Lord technology is over Clara’s head.

Whenever the Doctor started spouting technical jargon, Clara tuned him out. She taught English, not science, and even if that hadn’t been the case, earth science and Gallifreyan science were quite literally worlds, and probably millennia, apart. Even with a solid grounding in physics it was doubtful whether she would have been able to tell her temporal circuitry from her dimensional transducer.

 
“You’re not listening!” the Doctor complained. “I’m trying to educate you in the finer points of temporal engineering, and all you do is stare into space. I might as well just say it’s a thing that does stuff.”
