Working for Torchwood could be exhausting, and inevitably, some days, and nights, even some weeks, were worse than others. Ianto had lost count of how many times he, or one of his teammates, had fallen asleep at their desk, or somewhere even less convenient. It was part of the job. No amount of caffeine could take the place of sleep, no matter how skilfully brewed the coffee might be. Today, the lack of rest was catching up to some people.

They’d all been busy, and Ianto had provided the caffeinated beverages at regular intervals, but while he and Gwen had managed a few naps throughout the day, Jack had blithely insisted that he was fine and had kept going for… however long it had been. Ianto had lost track of time at some point, which was a bit disconcerting but not altogether surprising. This, however, was.

“I thought Jack didn’t sleep,” Gwen commented, frowning at her boss, who was currently zonked out on the battered old sofa beneath the Torchwood sign.

Ianto raised an eyebrow at his colleague’s comment. “Whatever gave you that idea?”

“It’s what he told me, a few days after I started working here. I remember I’d just had my first session on the firing range. Jack and I came back up here, and we were talking about… something, and he told me he didn’t sleep. Why would he lie about that?”

“Ah, well, he likes to seem mysterious. He doesn’t need as much sleep as the rest of us, at least not under normal circumstances, but four deaths in one day… all that dying and reviving takes a lot out of him, especially if he doesn’t have time to eat in between deaths.” Ianto smiled fondly at the sight of his lover, sound asleep. “Not sure what your husband’s excuse is though.” He pulled out his phone to take a picture, just because it was cute to see the way Jack was wrapped around Rhys like he was cuddling a big, squishy teddy bear.

“He’s not used to working Torchwood hours, and he’s not really a night owl. He’d usually be in bed by now, if we were at home. Do you think we should… I don’t know, try to move them apart a bit?” Gwen asked doubtfully.

“No, definitely not.” Ianto shook his head. “That might disturb them, and after today they both need their beauty sleep. Rhys was a big help; we couldn’t have managed without him.” A wicked grin curved his lips. “Besides, I want to see the looks on their faces when they wake up and realise who they’ve been cuddling with. Ten quid says Rhys wakes up first.”

Gwen began to grin too. “You’re on! I know my man; Rhys could sleep through an earthquake. Jack will wake up first; you said yourself he needs less sleep than the rest of us.”

Ianto and Gwen shook hands on the bet. It hardly mattered who won, this was sure to be highly entertaining, and with a few adjustments to camera position, Ianto made sure the Hub’s CCTV would capture the whole thing for posterity, just in case he and Gwen were asleep themselves by the time the sleepers awoke.
