“Stupid weather,” Buffy muttered, scowling at the pouring rain. Her makeup was no doubt ruined, but it didn’t matter because the rest of her was a wreck anyway.
Her hair hung in sodden rattails, there was mud smeared on her forehead and cheek, her shirt was torn, she was soaked to the skin, and to top it all, she’d lost her barrette. Being the Slayer sucked! At least Giles had an umbrella. Speaking of…
“Good work, Buffy,” her Watcher said as he approached.
“Good work? Have you seen me? I look like I’ve been mudwrestling! Why’d it have to rain?”
“Ah, well, weather can be unpredictable, a fact that appears to hold true even in sunny California.”
“Well I wish it wouldn’t! My hair’s ruined, and my clothes… Do you have any idea how much this shirt cost?”
“I don’t understand why you get dressed up for patrol. You know it can get… messy.”
“Hello, teenage girl here! I like to look nice when I go out, in case I run into a cute boy, or someone I know.”
“Prioritizing fashion is…”
Buffy whirled to glare at Giles. “Don’t lecture me! I’m already giving up any hope of a normal social life to save the world from vampires and demons. The least you can do is let me look pretty while I’m doing it! Are we done here?”
Giles took a step back. “Yes, yes, I believe so.”
“Good. Now you can help me sneak back into the school so I can use the showers there. I’ve got a change of clothes in my locker. I just hope when I get home mom doesn’t notice I’m wearing a different top to the one I went out in.”
Buffy squelched away in the direction of school. Sighing, Giles trailed after her.
