Living in London, his TARDIS parked in Donna’s back garden, is relaxing, even if it took a bit of getting used to at first. Oh, he still pops off on the occasional adventure, he’s taken Rose on a trip or three, usually without Donna’s knowledge or approval, but… Well, it’s what he does, isn’t it, taking companions out into the universe for a look around, and Rose deserves to have some adventures of her own, just like her mum had. If anyone was born to travel in the TARDIS, it’s Donna’s daughter.

All in all, the Doctor’s life is pretty good right now, and when he’s not off wandering through space and time, he sometimes wanders the streets of London instead. Usually, when he’s been there before, he’s been battling one alien threat or another, so it makes a change to see what the city’s like when people aren’t running around screaming. Makes him feel like an ordinary person, sort of, and you never know who you might bump into. As vast as London might seem to the people who live there, it’s tiny compared to the universe, so maybe he shouldn’t be surprised, but he is anyway.

So, it’s not a planned meeting, although he maybe should have looked her up since he’s here, it’s just another one of those chance encounters, a bit like the way he’d managed to run into Donna when he was least expecting to. But he ended up not being sorry about that meeting, and he’s not sorry about this one either, because how could he be when she’s standing right there in front of him? She looks a little older, a lot surer of herself, but she’s still essentially the same. Well, apart from being rather pregnant.

“Martha Jones, well I never! Look at you, you’re positively blooming; life’s obviously been treating you well since the last time we met.”

“Doctor.” Martha’s smile is slightly uncertain. “You’re looking… older, is that even possible?”

“Oi! I age, just like anyone else, it just doesn’t always show on the outside, and… Last time I regenerated, I got this old face back. It’s a bit more lived-in, but, well, no complaints. Seems I had some unfinished business to deal with. But what about you? Boy or girl? Do you know? Do you WANT to know? Because I could tell you if you do. Who’s the daddy? Mickey Mouse?”

“Hey! Don’t talk about my husband that way!” Martha grins. “You haven’t changed a bit, still talk a mile a minute, still don’t let a girl get a word in edgewise.”

“Yeah, well.” The Doctor rocks on his toes for a minute, grinning, hands jammed in his pockets. “There’s a café just across the street; let me buy you a cuppa, and you can tell me everything… Well, maybe not EVERYTHING, some things should be kept to yourself, but we can talk, or you can talk and I’ll just… listen. I’m getting better at that.”

“A cup of tea would be wonderful.”

“In that case…” He offers her his arm. “Shall we?”

Martha takes it. “We shall.”

And just like that, they’re two old friends, going for a cuppa and a chat, a chance to catch up on each other’s news and perhaps reminisce on times past. The Doctor decides he rather likes it.
