Search and rescue missions were part of Ianto’s life, and had been even before he’d left earth with Jack to travel the universe in their cargo ship. Back when they’d been with Torchwood, they’d dealt with aliens accidentally stranded on earth, locating them and helping them, wherever possible, to get home. Now, however, things were a bit more complicated.
Instead of simply searching a city and its surrounding countryside, they were searching the depths of space for whatever might remain of a spaceship that failed to reach its destination. Sometimes, all they found was wreckage, the result of a catastrophic explosion, or an attack by pirates. Other times, they might find a disabled but still intact vessel, or lifepods containing survivors.
This time, they found a distress beacon, orbiting a small planet. The ship, badly damaged when it had come out of the vortex too close to the tail of a passing comet, had tried to land, but had gone out of control and crashed. They’d managed to launch the beacon on their way down, but hadn’t expected to be found.
As the survivors boarded the Wanderer’s shuttle, Ianto smiled.
“Another successful rescue mission.”
Jack nodded. “Makes our efforts worthwhile.”
