Sacrificing herself so that Dawn would live had been the right thing to do, even though it had meant leaving Sunnydale without a Slayer. Buffy had already died once and been replaced by Kendra, whose death had led to Faith being called. This time she’d known there would be no new Slayer activated to take her place, but still she hadn’t doubted that she was doing the right thing, the ONLY thing.
She’d had no regrets. Dawn was so young, and she deserved the chance of a normal life. Buffy’s decision had perhaps been the most selfless one she’d ever made, and she’d been amply rewarded for it. Death had brought only peace and serenity. No more stress, no more worry, she’d simply drifted in a place of safety and security, all her earthly troubles far behind her, and she’d been… happy.
Then all of that calm contentment had been snatched away, and she’d found herself back in the world of the living, where everything was too loud, too bright, just too much to bear. It hurt. Every breath, every heartbeat, every touch… even the air seemed to scrape against her too sensitive skin like sandpaper.
This was the world she’d willingly left, and she’d never understood just how painful it was to be alive until she’d experienced the peace that came after. She didn’t want to be here, but she hadn’t been given any choice. Her friends had thought they were saving her, rescuing her from a hell dimension, when instead all they’d done was condemn her to something worse than Hell.
What they’d done had been selfish. They’d wanted her back so she could continue her duties as the Slayer, and care for her sister. They expected her to be grateful. Truth was, she’d been better off dead.
