“Welcome to Cardiff in the twenty-fifth century,” Jack told his team cheerfully.
“Seriously?” Owen stared around himself as if expecting some kind of trick.
“Yes. You wanted to see the future, and here it is.” Jack spread his arms out, inviting the others to admire the sights. “What d’you think?”
Ianto nodded approvingly. “It’s a lot cleaner than the twenty-first century. Doesn’t look much like Cardiff though. I’m not seeing much in the way of familiar landmarks. The bay’s still here, but what happened to the Millennium Centre?”
“Demolished… oh, forty or fifty years back. Subsidence. A lot can change in four hundred years, give or take a decade or two. Buildings get torn down, new ones get built, everything just keeps moving forward. Certain things of historic importance get preserved, usually moved to museums but sometimes incorporated into new buildings, or new versions of the old buildings. Very little stays the same.”
“What about the Hub? Is that still here?” Gwen asked, looking towards where Mermaid Quay should have been, but wasn’t.
“Torchwood was moved to a new location in 2259, when it was decided the seawall was becoming unsafe.” Jack turned off the device, and the future vanished.
