It had looked like Scott, sounded like him, behaved like him, for the most part, at least enough to fool Fred, and even Varian hadn’t sensed anything wrong at first. He’d accepted what seemed to be Scott at face value… That had been a mistake. It was only when he realised that no image appeared in the Pool of Mirrors when Scott looked into it that Varian had become suspicious. It was just as well he’d noticed that detail. The pool reflected the mind, so whatever this was, it wasn’t a person in any normal sense. It had no mind of its own, it could be no more than a shell, designed to deceive.
The duplicate ‘Scott’ proved far stronger than a thirteen-year-old human boy should be, tossing Fred aside as if he weighed nothing, then picking up a rock that must have weighed more than the real Scott, preparing to throw it at Varian, but…
Now that Varian was aware of the threat, he had the means to combat it, even though it went against his pacifist nature. Then again, what he was dealing with was not human, or even strictly speaking alive. It had a physical presence, yes, but there were no alpha waves… He would obviously have to be more alert in future, at least until he and the others escaped the island and returned to their own times. He couldn’t afford to be fooled that way again.
The sonic energiser was designed to heal, that was all it ought to be used for, but when necessary, Varian had already found that it could be turned to other uses. It wasn’t exactly easy, but it was possible, and it worked well enough to reduce the fake Scott to so much dust.
But where was the real Scott?
The End
