Dust was an unavoidable fact of life; no matter how much anyone cleaned, there would always be more of it. The entire world was dusty, which made Ianto sometimes wonder why he even bothered trying to keep the Hub reasonably clean. Not spotless, because that was an impossibility, but an acceptable level of cleanliness.

He suspected he mostly did it in an effort to avoid too much being tracked into the med bay and the kitchen, which did need to be clean, but it was a thankless task. Literally. Nobody ever thanked him for cleaning up after them, emptying the wastebins, mopping up spills, sweeping up when they tracked dirt, grit, and dried mud throughout Torchwood’s base. How had they not drowned in their own filth before he joined the team? It was a mystery.

But he was the General Support Officer, which meant all the routine tasks fell to him. Repairs, cleaning, re-stocking, feeding… Besides, he worked there himself, so he was damned if he was going to spend his days surrounded by layers of muck. He had standards even if the rest of the team didn’t. It was a matter of respect, for himself if not for them.
