Seven-year-old Dee sat astride the top of the orphanage’s roof and pondered his situation. He was a very long way above the ground, which didn’t bother him all that much; more than once he’d climbed through his bedroom window into the tree growing outside, then down to the ground, and he’d only fallen once, so he wasn’t scared that he might fall off. Not really. But getting all the way up here hadn’t been easy, and now he was tired, and getting down again was going to be so much harder…

He was only up here because some of the older kids had dared him. They’d said he’d be too scared to even try, but he’d shown them! They’d never call him a baby again. Babies didn’t climb up onto roofs!

It was kinda cool being this high up. He could see so far, miles and miles probably. If he stayed here all night, he might be high enough to almost touch the stars! He wished he could catch one and give it to Mother. Staying on the roof all night wouldn’t be a good idea though, it would get cold, and anyway, Mother would worry. She always tucked him into bed at night, and if she couldn’t find him…

He looked down the slope of the roof to the attic window he’d climbed out of. Surely he could get back down to it. Trouble was, he wouldn’t be able to see where he was going.

Before he could decide what to do, he was distracted by the sound of an engine, and turning his head, he saw a shiny red fire truck coming along the street, which was awesome, but also not, because he was way up here, and if he’d been down there he might’ve gotten right up close to it!

To his surprise, it stopped right outside the orphanage, and his heart sank. What if it was here to give some of the kids a ride, and he’d miss out because he was up on the roof? Life was so unfair sometimes. Why’d Brian and his buddies have to dare him to climb up here TODAY of all days? Had they known about the fire truck?

Then the ladder was raised and a uniformed firefighter appeared at the edge of the roof.

“Hey, kid. Need a hand gettin’ down from there?”

“I guess.” This was so cool!
