This vacation was going to Hell in a handbasket. Dee had thought getting some alone time with Ryo, in another country no less, might get some forward momentum going in the relationship that wasn’t yet, although not for want of him trying to get something moving. But all he’d gotten were a couple of smooches before both Bikky and Carol had shown up, having somehow managed to get plane tickets without anyone wondering why two kids were making a transatlantic flight alone!
Having two intruders on what Dee had imagined turning into a romantic getaway had been bad enough, they’d cramped his style from the moment they’d shown up, but now he found himself dealing with something else he totally hadn’t been expecting, and…
It was beyond annoying; it was infuriating! He’d gone to Ryo to tell him what he’d just seen, and his oh so sensitive and in touch with his emotions partner didn’t believe him! No, it was worse than simple disbelief; Ryo was completely dismissive, telling him that if he saw anything at all, it was just a trick of the light, that ghosts didn’t exist, and that he should stop filling Bikky’s impressionable ten-year-old head with such nonsense. Okay, those weren’t Ryo’s precise words, but that was what he’d meant, and it cut Dee to the quick, because he knew what he’d seen! He wasn’t an idiot, to be fooled by some random beam of light, and he wasn’t imagining things. Neither was Biks; they’d both seen the exact same thing.
It had been the ghost of a young girl, maybe Carol’s age, and just as pretty, but pale to the point of being transparent. She’d been right there, at the bottom of the stairs, and she’d looked so sad, like she was crying, and then she’d looked up at them, looked them right in the eyes, before she’d sort of… melted through the floor or something. And now Ryo, mister I’m so calm and logical, had the nerve to tell him to stop making up stupid stories? Who did he think he was talking to?
Well, screw him. Or not, because after THAT, Dee wasn’t even interested in trying to seduce his partner. He’d completely lost his desire for some between the sheets action, at least for the moment. Seeing a ghost kind of put a damper on a guy’s libido; Dee knew that for a fact. This wasn’t the first ghost he’d seen, although it was hands down the saddest, and maybe he shouldn’t have been so freaked out, especially not in front of the brat because that didn’t do his tough guy reputation any good, but… He couldn’t help it; even sad ghosts were WAY creepy! Chills down the spine kind of creepy.
Anyway, if Ryo was going to be like that about what they’d seen, no way was Dee leaving Bikky with a non-believer all night. It wouldn’t be fair on the kid, having to suffer through nightmares with no sympathy whatsoever from his legal guardian. Ryo had all the imagination of a rock! So much for being empathetic and in touch with his feelings. Biks could share Dee’s room tonight, just in case the ghost showed up again. Safety in numbers and all that. Ideally, they would all have camped out together, preferably with the lights on, but obviously THAT wasn’t happening, not when Ryo was being so cruel and uncaring.
Dee hoped the ghost would show up in Ryo’s room and scare the pants off him… which was a sight he would pay good money to see, but that was beside the point. He hoped Ryo got haunted all night. Then let him tell everyone ghosts weren’t real, nothing but a trick of the light. Hah! If Ryo came running to his room, scared out of his mind, Dee planned on laughing his ass off.
“Thought you didn’t believe in ghosts,” he’d say. “Nothing but a trick of the light; that’s what you told me and Biks. Since ghosts aren’t real, accordin’ to you, there’s nothin’ for you to be scared of, right?”
Yep, that was what he’d do, but if Ryo apologised… well, maybe Dee would be kind and let his partner get in bed with them, just to prove he was the better man. But only if he got that apology first.
The End
