“What have you got there, Biks?”
The boy had come home from school clutching a sheet of paper, and Ryo was finding the expression on his foster son’s face impossible to read. He wondered if Bikky had gotten into some kind of trouble that he was scared to tell his guardian about.
“Oh, uh…” Bikky held out the flyer. “Everyone on the basketball team got one, even the reserves, but…” He trailed off, gnawing on his bottom lip.
“Basketball camp,” Ryo said, reading the much-folded piece of paper. “I didn’t know there was a special camp for basketball players.” He’d only heard of summer camp and band camp when he’d been in school. Then again, he hadn’t really been on any sports teams, not until his final year, when he’d played soccer for a while. “I expect you’d like to go.”
“Well, yeah, ‘course I would, but it’s a lot of money.”
Ryo read the details and gave a low whistle. “It certainly is, but from what’s listed here, all the workshops, accommodation, transport, meals, and everything… It doesn’t seem overpriced for three weeks of intensive training.”
“But you already had to pay for a new refrigerator ‘cause the old one broke, and that cost almost as much as basketball camp.”
“Everything’s expensive these days. But we don’t need to pay for this until the end of next month, so that gives us time to save up. If we just cut back on a few treats for a while, we should be able to make it work.”
“You really think so?” Bikky’s eyes lit up.
“I’m sure of it.” Ryo had more than enough in his savings, but he was trying to teach Bikky about budgeting, so this would be a good lesson. “Let’s figure out how we’ll do it.”
