Summary: Nothing is harder to deal with than fungal infestations.

Of all the reasons to break down, fungal spores clogging the intake valves had to be the worst. Invisible to the naked eye, they were too small to cause problems, unless they accumulated in such vast numbers that the filters became thickly coated, and then even air couldn’t get through. Worse, they had a bad habit of quickly germinating whenever they found themselves in an environment that suited them, which just made matters worse.

 
So here the Doctor was, spraying an anti-fungal solution over spores and fungi alike, turning the lot into sludge. There had to be an easier way!
