“What’s so special ‘bout pedigree dogs anyway?” Dee demanded. “Half of ‘em look badly designed, faces all smooshed up so they can’t breathe properly, jowls hangin’ so they drool all the time… and the rest are so small if they weren’t forever barkin’, growlin and snappin’ at people’s ankles with their sharp little teeth, they’d probably get stepped on and squashed.”
“They’re status symbols a lot of the time,” Ryo replied. “Many purebred dogs are so expensive, only the richest people can afford to buy them. I feel sorry for them. I know a lot of them are pampered lapdogs, but they get overfed with all the wrong kinds of foods, and under exercised, so they wind up overweight and unhealthy. And the big dogs are bought to be shown off, or as guard dogs, chained outside in all weathers. Or they’re show dogs, primped and paraded around the showring. Mongrels often have a better quality of life than pedigree dogs.”
“I can believe that.” Dee looked down at the miniature dachshund sitting on his foot. “Not all pedigree dogs have it so rough though. Look at His Royal Longness.”
“Yes, but we let him play like any other dog.”
