Scott paused, looking around himself, worried. “Are we lost?”

Coming up beside the boy, Willaway looked around too. “Technically, if you think about it, we’ve all been lost since we first arrived on this mad island.” He looked back along the trail he and Scott were following, then faced forwards again; there wasn’t another living soul in sight. “It does appear that we may have misplaced our friends though.”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” Scott sat down on a rock at the side of the trail “It’s my fault. I should know better than to go wandering off.”

“Oh no.” Willaway shook his head. “If anyone’s at fault, it’s me. If I hadn’t wanted to take a closer look at the ruins back there, we wouldn’t be in this situation. You just tagged along.” He gave an exasperated huff. “My curiosity is always getting me in trouble. You’d think I’d have learned by now, but no, the moment I see something, I have to take a look. As ruins go, they weren’t even particularly interesting. Ah well. Perhaps this time I’ll learn from my mistakes.”

“What do we do now?” Scott fiddled with the straps of his backpack. “They’re gonna be worried when they realise we’ve disappeared.”

“We must be following the wrong path, or we would have caught up by now. We couldn’t have spent more than ten or fifteen minutes looking around, and our friends weren’t walking fast. Perhaps we should go back to the ruins and try a different path.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea.” Scott stood up. “If we go back to the last place we saw them, they’re bound to backtrack once they realise we’re missing, and then they’ll find us.”

“Right. See? We’re not as lost as we thought we were.” Willaway gave a satisfied nod. “Come on.” Turning around, he set off back along the path, walking briskly, with Scott right behind him.

Less than twenty minutes later, they were back among the ruins, and there, to their relief, were their friends, looking worried.

“There you are!” Varian strode toward them. “We turned around and you were gone!”

“Entirely my fault,” Willaway said. “We were looking at the ruins, and apparently my sense of direction leaves a lot to be desired. We took the wrong path.”

“In future, tell someone if you’re gonna wander off,” said Fred. “Thought we’d lost you for good.”
