Tosh’s mind was whirling as her new boss gave her a guided tour of the underground base he called the Hub. She didn’t know what she’d been expecting, but it wasn’t this.


Jack had brought her in through a secret entrance, a false wall at the back of a shabby room. They’d taken the lift deep underground to a vast concrete cavern where there were computers, an office, and the bottom of the water tower that stood at the edge of the Plas. He’d shown her the medical bay, morgue, armoury, then deeper into the ground, the shooting range, archives, and cells… At first she’d half expected him to lock her inside one, tell her that was where she’d live when she wasn’t working, but instead he’d merely introduced her the resident alien, Janet, a mostly bald, toothy creature he said was called a Weevil.


Back in the main Hub, Jack showed her to a desk.


“This is where you’ll work, and here’s your first job.” He pointed to an odd device.


“What is it?”


“An alien gadget.”


“What does it do?”


Jack winked at her. “That, my brilliant Toshiko, is what I hope you’ll be able to tell me.”
