Dee and Ryo stood together watching as cars rolled up, a bus, the odd taxi, a couple of motorbikes, even a bicycle, bring a new batch of fresh-faced, wide-eyed young cadets to the Police Academy.
They lugged their bags into the reception building, to check in and be assigned quarters for the duration of this first stage of training. Before long, the first bunch blundered out again, eyes glued to the maps in the information booklets they’d been given, glancing at their surroundings occasionally, trying to learn where everything was as they made their way to the dorms.
Dee snorted. “Look at them, scurryin’ around like ants. Were we ever that keen and eager to join the fight against crime?”
Ryo grinned at his husband. “You, I couldn’t say, but I think I most likely was.” His smile faded into a thoughtful expression that Dee knew well. “I was more serious than most of them though, because of my reasons for applying to the Academy.”
“Yeah, I know what ya mean.” Dee had also joined the force for intensely personal reasons; they’d both lost family to violent crime, had both experienced that total helplessness. “A lot of these kids won’t make it; they’ll wash out, either from the academy of durin’ their rookie year. They’ll find out becomin’ a cop’s a lot harder than they expected.”
“Nothing really worthwhile is ever easy,” Ryo pointed out. “The hard work’s worth it though. I have no regrets.”
Dee smiled softly. “Me neither.”
