“You think too much,” Dee told his partner, getting a baffled look in response.
“Too much? We work in a profession where we have to use our brains all the time, finding clues, fitting them together, questioning suspects and hoping to trip them up in a lie… Thinking is kind of important. I don’t see how it’s possible to think too much.”
“Okay, maybe I should’a worded that differently. You overthink things and just wind up worryin’ about stuff ya have no control over. Plus you’re not good at switchin’ off at the end of the workday.”
“I do some of my best work after hours, when I have fewer things distracting me,” Ryo insisted.
“In which case, I must not be doin’ my job right or you’d be too distracted to think at all.”
“Oh, so this is you wanting my attention, or do you just want sex?”
“That’s not what I’m sayin!” Dee threw his hands in the air. “Do I like havin’ your attention? ‘Course I do, and I love sex, that goes without sayin’, but you sit there frownin’, wrestlin’ with whatever case we’re workin’ and if ya don’t get enough downtime you’re gonna burn out, or give yourself ulcers, or a heart attack.” He sat down on the sofa beside his lover. “I worry about you.”
“You knew what I was like when we started dating.”
“Yeah, and you knew what I was like, but ya persuaded me to quit smokin’ and take better care of my health. That’s all I’m tryin’ to do. Face it, babe; you’re a workaholic, as addicted to work as I was to my smokes.”
Ryo sighed. “I know, but I don’t think they make a patch to deal with my addiction.”
Dee grinned. “Guess that’s why you’ve got me.”
