This should not have happened. It was bad enough that the suspect had managed to get the jump on then, with the help of a couple of his buddies, but now here Dee and Ryo were, chained to railings with their own handcuffs, their police radios, handguns, and cell phones left in a neat pile out of their reach. Just to add to their woes, their suspect had taken both sets of handcuff keys with him.

“Now what?” Dee muttered. “Do we just start yellin’ for help and hope someone hears us?”

“I’m not sure that would be the best idea. What if whoever heard us just took our guns and radios and left us here?”

“Yeah,” Dee agreed. “As bad as this is, that would be worse.”

“Maybe if I…” Ryo shifted, sliding the handcuff to the bottom of the railings and stretching out face down on the cold, hard ground. “Can’t see what I’m doing, you’ll have to guide me. Am I close?” His left foot was only an inch or two from their belongings.

“Yeah. If you can just move your left foot a couple inches to the right and then pull it back slowly…”

It took a good ten minutes, with Ryo straining every muscle, but he managed to drag one of their radios to a point where Dee could reach it with his free hand.

“Got it!”

“Good.” Ryo was panting with exertion.

“Now what?”

“Call dispatch and have then send a locksmith to our location. Once you’ve done that, I’ll try to reach our guns. Just in case we have to defend ourselves.” He hoped that wouldn’t be necessary, but under the circumstances…

“Maybe I should try. You’re about worn out, and I’m taller.”

“You’re further away,” Ryo pointed out.

“Think you could try to nudge our stuff towards me?”

“That’s what I’ve been doing!” Ryo contorted himself to glare at Dee over his shoulder.

“Right. Sorry.”

“Just radio for the locksmith.”

Dee nodded and got on with that, listening to the guys at dispatch snickering over their predicament. They’d never live this down.

I'm glad they were able to get to the radio. May living down the ribbing be the worst that happens!
