Trees. Nothing but trees, everywhere they looked. Almost every planet they visited through the stargate had trees, and almost all of the trees they saw were the same species you could find on earth… At the start, Jack had felt absurdly cheated, because travelling to other planets he’d expected to see alien landscapes, alien skies, alien cities, alien animals, alien aliens, alien plants, and alien trees; everything should have been alien to some degree. But for the most part, all they saw were landscapes that could have easily been somewhere on earth, humans, who were generally less advanced than those of present-day earth, grass, and a whole lot of trees, and yet…
Despite a certain amount of disappointment, in a way, the familiarity was comforting, especially since the few planets they’d visited that hadn’t been like earth had been jarring, and not what anyone would call hospitable. Besides, trees meant plenty of oxygen, shelter from the weather, and a source of fuel for their campfires if they were spending the night, something to heat their rations over, and help them stay warm if the temperature dropped. Plus, they offered concealment from potential enemies, which could come in handy… It was always good to have something solid to hide behind.
“Cedars,” said Daniel, smiling and taking a deep breath of the resin scented air. “Nothing but cedars in every direction, and the forest is immense… I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many trees, all of one kind, in one place; makes me wonder if it’s some kind of plantation. I mean it looks pretty wild now, but maybe it’s this way by design.”
“Or maybe cedars are the only trees that’ll grow here,” Jack replied. “At least we won’t need to worry about moths eating our socks while we’re here.”
