“Uh oh,” Fred murmured, low enough that only his travelling companions could hear. “Looks like we got trouble comin’.”
Willaway raised an eyebrow. “Really. What gave it away?”
The people approaching the small group were heavily armed and armoured, tinted visors hiding their eyes.
Varian stepped forward, hands out, showing that he was unarmed. “We come in peace.” All that got him was a savage blow from one of the weapons that took him to his knees.
“Varian!” Stricken, Scott dropped to the ground beside his friend, Willaway to Varian’s other side, Fred and Liana flanking them, ready to fight if necessary.
“Silence!” a voice barked. “This is Serattan territory. Outsiders are not permitted within our borders. You will leave. NOW!”
“Yeah, sure. Not gonna stay where we’re not wanted.” Fred turned to where Scott and Willaway were helping Varian to his feet. The tall man wavered unsteadily, clearly dazed, possibly concussed. “You okay, partner?”
“Let’s just… leave.”
“That’s the plan.” Fred took Scott’s place at Varian’s side, getting an arm around their injured leader as Scott scooped up Varian’s bag. Turning, they made their way the twenty or so yards back to the gateway, passing through it into the previous zone.
“I wonder what they’ve got in there that has them guarding their borders so securely,” Willaway mused as he and Fred lowered Varian to the ground.
“Whatever it is, it’s none of our business. How’re you doin’?”
“I’ll be alright, just a little dizzy.”
“Okay, looks like we’re gonna be stayin’ here, at least overnight.” Fred dug his medical bag out of his holdall and set about tending the gash across Varian’s temple. “Once you’re up to travellin’ again, we’ll have to find another route east.”
“I just hope there is one,” Willaway said. “Otherwise, we’re in trouble.”

Date: 2026-01-13 11:50 am (UTC)The trouble with travelling through the zones is that they never know what or who they'll encounter. Not everyone will be nice.
Thank you!
