York had claimed there’d simply been an accident, that Rayat’s son Roland had fallen into the ravine and been killed. He’d looked and sounded so sincere, and Rayat had believed him, because violence was completely beyond his understanding, but the travellers knew otherwise. York was a convicted murderer, the spaceship that had crashed had been taking him and another prisoner to a maximum-security facility.
The problem was, even though they had proof, Rayat didn’t want to hear it. He and his people were so innocent! They believed in peace and harmony, with each other and with nature; Varian respected, even admired that, and if he’d been alone, he might have been tempted to stay, but now that very peace and harmony had been disrupted in the cruellest way imaginable.
The worst part was that Varian and his friends were ultimately responsible for this disaster. They’d been the ones to rescue the survivors from the crashed spacecraft, and they’d taken the two men at their word, believing them to be the craft’s pilot and co-pilot. Jonathan had entertained certain doubts when York had rebuffed all his attempts to discuss technology, and Varian knew now that he should have paid more attention to the scientist’s instincts, but… Well, it was too late now.
They couldn’t change the past; what mattered was what they did next. They’d brought danger into Rayat’s zone, into his home, and they couldn’t simply walk away from the harm their actions had caused. But meeting violence with violence wasn’t going to fix things, and violence went against Varian’s nature anyway. There had to be some other way to stop York before he killed again. There wasn’t even the option of locking him away, since Rayat’s people had no use for locks or even doors.
What could they do?
