Fred blamed Willaway for this. Everything had been going fine, more or less, until Varian had invited the scientist to travel with them, and now he, Varian, and Liana were handcuffed to this post, Scottie was locked up somewhere else, probably with the kid Sigma, and Willaway himself was sentenced to death! Well, it was his own damn fault, poking around where he shouldn’t have been!
The worst part was, they couldn’t just leave him to his fate, much as Fred might have been tempted to.
“Once we get him outta here, I'm gonna... have a little talk with him.” What he was going to say would be between him and Willaway, but it was time someone laid down some ground rules, and since Varian didn’t seem inclined to put their newest travelling companion in his place, preferring not to interfere with other people’s free will, looked like it was up to Fred to deal with him.
Of course, the three of them would first have to free themselves, then find and free Scott, before they could do anything about Willaway’s situation, which just added to the grievances Fred already had against the scientist. He’d only been with them for a few days, and he was already proving more trouble than he was worth. Not that Fred had considered him worth a damn to start with. And yet…
In the end, it was at least partly Willaway’s way with words that helped get them all out of the trouble he’d gotten them into. Not that it was easy convincing Alpha to let them go; he was stubborn and desperate, trying to do what he thought was best for the other kids. He’d just needed some guidance to help him find a better way.
Fred sighed. Maybe Willaway wasn’t so bad.
