There were times Ryo felt like he could cheerfully strangle Dee. He was loving, caring, romantic, passionate, and mostly considerate, but he could also be an entitled asshole.
Back when they’d first started working together, as the senior detective he’d thought nothing of dumping all his paperwork on his new partner, expecting him to do it without complaint. He’d said as much just minutes after the Chief had decided to pair them up in the vain hope that some of Ryo’s work ethic might rub off on Dee.
Things had changed to a certain extent about a year into their working relationship, when Ryo had firmly put his foot down and told Dee he was through being treated like his clerical assistant. They were partners, equal in rank, and he expected to be treated that way. Dee hadn’t been happy, but after Ryo threatened not to invite him for dinner anymore, he’d caved. Free meals, it seemed, outweighed the tedium of paperwork.
That was all a couple of years in the past now though. Since then they’d progressed from work partners, to best friends, to lovers, even if most people were still unaware of that last part.
Maybe the current situation was at least partially Ryo’s fault, since he’d always prided himself on being a good host when anyone, even his own boyfriend, was visiting him. Not that he didn’t expect Dee to at least help with the dishes, if not the cooking, when he came over for dinner these days, and his lover was perfectly capable of fixing coffee, tea, or other drinks as required. He even cooked breakfast some mornings after spending the night; his pancakes were amazingly light and fluffy.
Today though…
Ryo had prised himself up out of the armchair to check on dinner, while Dee was stretched out on the sofa with the evening paper.
“Fetch me another beer while you’re up, babe.” Dee waved an empty bottle in Ryo’s direction.
Not even so much as a ‘please’ or ‘thankyou’, just a straight-up order! Ryo fumed. Yes, he’d fetched Dee a beer earlier when he’d gotten one for himself, before he’d started preparing dinner, but that didn’t mean he was going to wait on his lover hand and foot all night. He was tired and sore from a long day at work, and he would have liked to stretch out with his feet up, only Dee had commandeered the sofa as soon as they’d come in.
Ryo stopped in his tracks, glaring at his lover, hands on hips. “No. You want another beer, get off your entitled ass and get it yourself. I’m not your servant!”
Dee turned to stare incredulously at his partner. “But I’m injured!”
“It’s hardly more than a scratch, didn’t even need stitches, and it’s your arm, not your leg. If I can still walk to the kitchen with a sprained knee, you can manage with a bandaged arm.”
“You’re right, sorry. I’m too used to bein’ looked after.”
“I noticed.”
