Dee trod water, rinsing his diving mask and checking his snorkel; one of the best things about his and Ryo’s occasional tropical vacations was the chance to do some diving that didn’t involve a full wetsuit along with heavy air tanks. He enjoyed scuba diving too, but sometimes it was nice to be under the water without all the paraphernalia.
Of course, snorkelling meant they couldn’t go deep, but in places like this, you could see plenty just by dipping under the surface. Colorful fish, corals, seaweeds, bizarre sea creatures, crabs, molluscs… You never knew what you might find.
“Still livin’ in hope of one day discoverin’ a shipwreck laden with treasure,” he joked, flashing a wide grin at his partner.
“Like that’s ever gonna happen!” Ryo splashed water at his lover. “Especially not in a place like this. Thousands of people probably dive here every year, locals and tourists. It there was anything to be found, it would’ve been discovered decades ago.”
“Doesn’t hurt to dream.” Dee put his mask on, and his snorkel in place, grinning around the mouthpiece and giving Ryo the thumbs up before submerging himself. Moments later, Ryo joined him, kicking gently with his flippers as they glided through the water, just beneath the surface, pointing things out to each other.
Talking wasn’t possible while they were submerged, but it didn’t matter; words weren’t necessary while they were exploring the underwater world. They could discuss all the things they saw later, over drinks or dinner. For now, all they cared about was seeing as much as they could before the tide came in and the water got too deep.
If there was any downside, it was that Ryo didn’t have a waterproof camera to photograph the wonders he and Dee were seeing beneath the waves.
