Summary: He used to be Gray’s hero, but now…

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: This is a bit rushed as the deadline is approaching, so apologies for it being substandard – I’ve been rushed off my feet this week and haven’t even had time for drabbling, but I wanted to at least get one written. I had other ideas, but they just didn’t go anywhere.

 

They’d been inseparable as children. Wherever he went, Gray would follow and he’d never minded because he’d loved his little brother and Gray had looked at him like he was a hero.

Then the monsters came and he failed to protect his brother; suddenly he didn’t feel like a hero at all. He’d searched for years, but it was hopeless, the universe was too big and he was just one man.

Now Gray was back, blaming him for the hell he’d been through, wanting revenge, wanting his brother to suffer as he had. It was all Jack’s fault.

Jack agreed.

I think the situation with Gray spiraled out of control like it did simply because Jack felt so guilty for letting go of his hand. Never mind that they were kids-he was the big brother, and it was his job to protect Gray, and he failed.

Also, I think John Hart underestimated exactly how crazy Gray really was. I think he was honestly sorry for using him to get 'revenge' on Jack. He seemed as shocked by the carnage Gray wrought as Jack was.

Yeah, I think when John found Gray he didn't realise he was completely unhinged, he just wanted to score points with Jack for resoring his brother to him. But Gray played John and before John knew it, he had a bomb molecular-bonded to his wrist and was being forced to help Gray get his revenge. John is no saint, he has problems with impulse control (mostly that he doesn't have any - he thinks something, he does it), but the carnage that occurred wasn't something he'd intended, he just completely lost control of the situation and couldn't prevent it.

Jack has been alive for a tremendously long time and he's been carrying around the guilt over letting go of Gray for most of it. His guilt has taken on a life of its own and it colours Jack's perceptions of things and his behaviour. It's made him more protective of the people he cares about so that when he fails them (as he sees it) that adds to his guilt over Gray. Jack's in serious need of therapy.
