Despite his reputation for being a bit of an airhead, Ryo was seldom late for work, or for anything else. He prided himself on being punctual, often ensuring he left early in order to arrive wherever he was going without having a mad rush.
It wasn’t always easy, especially now he had Bikky to get up and ready for school most days, but really it was just a matter of being well-organized. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d missed the start of shift, but there was no way he’d get to the precinct on time today.
‘I should’ve driven to work, or taken the bus,’ he thought to himself. The hot summer weather meant that across the city every apartment, house, or business that was lucky enough to have air-conditioning had it turned up. Mostly that meant a drain on the electrical grid in the evenings, when more people were at home. Rolling brownouts were a common feature of hot weather in the city. He hadn’t been expecting power cuts during his early morning commute though.
Ten minutes ago, everywhere had suddenly been plunged into darkness as all the lights went out, and the train he was on had stopped dead. So here he was, trapped with a bunch of other commuters on a train in a tunnel somewhere beneath the city, with no way of knowing when, or if, the power would come back on. He had a feeling this was the start of a very long day.
The End
